What Operating Systems are supported by the WinTV-HVR-1700?

The WinTV HVR 1700 model can be installed on XP and Vista operating systems. A Pentium 4 3Ghz minimum is required.

Latest drivers and installation procedures

The latest WinTV-HVR-1700 software and drivers are available here . Instructions on installation are listed with each download link.

WinTV initialization error: "Failed to Create TV Window, another application may be using the driver":

Make sure that the device is plugged in directly to the PC and not a HUB. Also, Make sure that the HCWSMD MPEG codecs are installed on the system.

Check in Device Manager to see if the device is listed properly in the “Sound, video, and game controllers”.

  • If it is, unplug the power from the unit and restart the computer. Upon reboot, plug it in again and try WinTV again.
  • If it is not listed properly, unplug the unit, restart the PC and uninstall the drivers and software using HCWCLEAR. After running the HCWCLEAR program, plug the unit back in and reinstall the drivers/applications.
  • If error continues to come up, try it in another PCI-Express slot.
  • If error still continues, it may be a defective unit and would require a replacement.

WinTV initialization error: hTV=0 error after WinTV drivers have been installed.

This error message can indicate a problem with the Driver installation or a hardware malfunction. Look in the Device Manager under the "Sound, video and game controllers" to see if the Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-1700 is listed.

If it is listed and there is a Yellow mark on it, this would indicate that the drivers would need to be reinstalled. Please refer to "Latest drivers and installation procedures" above

If it is not listed, this would normally indicate that the hardware was not recognized by the system and the drivers were unable to install. Try disconnecting the WinTV-HVR-1700 from the PCI-Express slot. Wait a few moments and reconnect the WinTV-HVR-1700 to the PCI-Express slot.

- If the Hardware Wizard detects the device, continue the installation of the drivers using the supplied installation CD Rom.

- If the hardware wizard does not detect the device, there may be a problem with the hardware. Try moving it to a different PCI-Express slot on the PC. If you get the same problem, the hardware may be defective and require repair. Contact Tech Support for more information.

Scanning of DVB-T (Digital) channels

When used in the home or office, we recommend a high gain roof top digital antenna. Some viewers will need to replace their aerials to receive digital transmissions if the installation is old or in poor condition. Digital Terrestrial coverage is improving all the time as digital terrestrial television transmitters are continuously being updated.

* For Digital Terrestrial reception, a high gain antenna is recommended.

The WinTV-HVR uses a rooftop antenna in the same way that most people currently receive their analogue television programmes. Digital Terrestrial coverage is improving all the time as digital terrestrial television transmitters are continuously being deployed.

For Singapore residence, some DVB-T reception with indoor antenna might be impaired by walls and high neighboring buildings/structures/trees. In such environments, an outdoor / roof-top DVB-T antenna is recommended. If you are using roof-top antenna with amplified signal, in theory, you should not encounter any reception problem and you should be able to receive all free-to-air DVB-t channels available in Singapore.

For optimal reception of DVB-T channels with any indoor antenna (DVB-t compatible), you have to be in a location with minimum disturbance on the DVB-T signal. If you are using indoor antenna in a building, you may receive only TV Mobile (scan with channel number 29,37,38 ) as it has stronger signal transmission than other free-to-air DVB-t channels.

Channel 29 (Digital 5,Digital 8,Digital CNA) Frequency 537 MHz

Channel 37 (TVMobile) Frequency 602 MHz

Channel 38 (HD5) Frequency 610 MHz

Please note that Starhub SCV point in Singapore is not for DVB-t reception.

If the signal of DVB-T is not strong in your area, you will not be able to receive digital channels.
